My new favorite commercial

So some may say that I am blatantly showing that I am unemployed, bored and glued to my TV by having a post about my favorite commercial. But here's what I say to those "some": Screw you.

The commercial. It is for a starburst-esque candy called Fruitella. Two young boys in a cinema, their candy (Fruitella) comes to life in animated form and starts running around causing havoc in the theatre. It then jumps up on stage in front of the screen, turns around, takes the bottom part of his own packaging and reveals the stack of square candy underneath. In effect, this animated piece of candy has mooned the two boys. He showed them his candy ass. Hilarious. The catch line for Fruitella is "Cheeky, but chewy". Love it. LOVE it.

I'd steer clear of the clotted cream. But do you know what I can't find here, which I always assumed was British? Altoids. Can't find them anywhere. I'm going through a curiosly strong withdrawl.

we used to live near an irish butcher's shop, and it kept us flush with Crunchie. the new bodega has all sorts of altoids, though. perhaps we could arrange a trade.

i went out and bought starburst after reading your post, from rupert at the david letterman hello deli... needless to say, he didn't have frutella.

Ah, I tried Crunchie over here, and I have to say, I was dissapointed (its crunchy honey covered in chocolate). Its strange being in a country where you don't know whats in the candy bars. I shall gladly make an exchange, as long as you throw in a Butterfinger as well.

and next time I am back in the states I will bring Fruitella for all.

Fair trade:

Altoids for Wrigleys Airwaves Chewing gum.

How do you survive there on that food?

Lauren said...

I am carying Wrigley's Airwaves chewing gum on my person as we speak.

How do I survive? I cook at home. Often. Asian food is quite good over here - but I'd kill for some Sushi or Tapas.

Ok, it's the defensive Brit here, living in Paris, working with Americans - makes me bitter about everything, you know? Anyway, you can actually buy Altoids in England, don't know where right now, but I know I have done. Secondly, English food is fantastic - better than all that powder in a box or gunk in a jar stuff you get in the States! Your food can be great too - but for God's sake, give ours a break will you? For the record, clotted cream is delicious but I do agree that Crunchie bars aren't so great. Try a Wispa Gold, or, even better, a giant purple Quality Street which you can get at the counter in newsagents and supermarkets. English chocolat ebars are great. Just all of you be grateful you're not stuck here eating à la French. Bisous.

Yes french chocolate is crap! shall i have a twix or a mars bar?? Quelle decision. Bloody commies forcing everyone to eat the same thing. Although if you gave the kermits too much choice they'd never decide! c'mon laz, defends ton pays.xx

My darling Kate, thank you for bringing my hopes up about the existence of Altoids over here. And you're right, people are too quick to judge english food. Its not that bad, but it is really expensive - which is actually more of the reason I stay in and cook more often (I can't force Stephane to take my fat ass out everynight, now can I?) I shall try your chocolate advice. There's just so much here, its rather dauntiny. And Ammo, I shall not defend mon pays, the only good chocolate to come out of France is Lion bars. I would however murder a cheap bottle of french red wine.

Yes, the wine would be good, think I'll be murdering one tonight - or at least a few pints of cider. For once I'm bored to hell at work and desperately searching for things to do - it isn't like I'm not trying, I've been begging my colleagues to give me stuff! Get some chocoate Lauren - and have a bite for me. In return, I shall drink for you ce soir. Put one on ice Ammo. Deal? x

A little Chinese candy input...

While I spent my 3 weeks in China wallowing in my food-less daze, there were a few things that kept me alive (woman can live on white rice only so long):

1) fresh fruit (especially the last week when it was the ONLY thing I ate)
2) peanuts (which actually for a time accompanied the above)
3) Hi-Chew Grape Candy. It tastes like grape flavored bubble yum. It is available here: http://www.animecastle.com/catalog/snacks/morinaga-hichew-candy/p_ace209.html

Speaking of gum... China also had some amazing gum. Produced by Wrigley's, it is COFFEE flavored gum! You would think Wrigley's would sell it here in the US and possibly sell TEA flavored gum in China. But no, Coffee flavored gum. I brought some back and everyone that tries it loves it (come on Wrigley's sell it in the US!). I have also furthered their marketing efforts by making this suggestion: sell BLACK COFFEE flavored gum along with CREAM and SUGAR gum in one package. This way, we can actually chew our gum as we take our coffee. Me, with a little cream please, no sugar.

You black coffee gum idea rocks, except that the idea of a cream flavored piece of gum by itself is pretty gross
